All entries for AIGA 50 must have been designed by firms or individuals in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, or West Virginia. The designs you submit may have been created for clients in any market. In addition, all entries must have been first published, printed, or circulated between October 29, 2013, and December 31, 2015. This competition is limited to commercially produced printed, narrative, and interactive media and considers the design of complete units only, except as noted for covers. Individual units, such as spreads, web pages, photographs, or illustrations, are not accepted. Entries are judged on the overall effectiveness of the design solution and the design brief, without regard to category. Any pieces that were created in a speculative manner are not eligible for this competition.

Date and Time

All entries must have been received by 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2015. In January 2016, judging will take place and winners will be notified by email. Awards will be given to winners present at the opening reception of the AIGA 50 exhibition, or mailed to each winner by May 30, 2016. A catalog of winning entries will not be published this year. Instead, all winners will be included in a special gallery on the competition website.

Rights Release

By entering the competition, you acknowledge AIGA DC’s right to display the accepted material in the exhibition, publications, or on the Internet. AIGA DC also reserves the right to use accepted material for additional promotional and/or informational materials.

Letter of Acceptance

You will be notified by email about the status of your entry only if your work is accepted for the exhibition. The letter of acceptance asks for complete information about those who participated in the entry’s creation, and you will be required to send us three additional copies of your entry to use in the exhibition and special online gallery. If the piece we accept is electronic, environmental, or oversized, we will work with you to display the piece in the exhibition and to provide digital images for the online gallery. One AIGA 50 Award will be presented for each entry our judges select for the exhibition, and Certificates of Excellence will be presented to all those who contributed to the creation of the entry. If our judges select one (or more) of your pieces, you will be asked to pay an exhibition fee of $40 per piece (AIGA members) or $60 per piece (non-members).

This year, special recognition will be bestowed upon five entries within the final 50: Judge’s Choice (three total), Design for Good, and Best in Show. For the Judge’s Choice, each judge will choose the piece they feel most exhibits design effectiveness. Comments on their favorite piece will be shared at the exhibition. Finally, our judges will recognize one piece that best highlights the principles of Design for Good.
